Physical Environment

Fellside Upper and Middle Schools were built in 1898. Both properties are self-containing and include their own residential, classroom and office accommodation. The properties, on Queens Road, are detached and of stone construction, with accommodation laid out on three floors, and enjoy spectacular views over Kendal and the surrounding countryside. The site is situated on the edge of Serpentine Woods and is within five minutes walking distance of the town centre (fifteen back up the hill).
Young people who come to Fellside are offered single bedroom accommodation. All rooms allow use for private study and have en-suite facilities.
There is ample room in both schools for watching TV, playing games or relaxing together. Young people can also meet privately with visitors and make phone calls.
Both schools have their own kitchen and dining facilities. The former is also used for cookery lessons and the latter so that everyone can share meals together around a big table. Mealtimes are a very enjoyable experience.
In Upper School education is centred in two, first floor, rooms which lend themselves superbly to creating an inspiring learning environment. There is a workshop where young people can receive instruction in woodworking and maintenance skills. In Middle School, education facilities are situated in a single story extension at the rear of the building. All facilities are available for use during evenings and weekends.
The grounds consist of driveways, providing access and parking, hard play areas and lawns edged with attractively landscaped borders and mature trees.
In the grounds of Upper School is a, beautifully designed, two-bedroom bungalow that offers Semi-Independent provision for two young people aged from 16-19 years. Within this building, and under the supportive umbrella of the school, these young people learn to live and care for themselves independently. They are able to access both work experience and education locally, the latter through Kendal College.
