The Story So Far

TheSPACE provides a wide range of separate, complementary services structured to support our core work of providing therapeutic care and education. The staff group, of over forty people, are reflective practitioners who share a creative vision for our work.

A central task of all involved at TheSPACE, young people and adults, is to establish and maintain a culture, which is inspiring and positive and so generates trust, hope and optimism, for now and for the future.

TheSPACE was founded in 2000 and offered Assessment, Training and Inspection to other schools and local authorities. The search for suitable residential premises, in order to develop our own schools, began.

Fellside School (Woodlands, as it was then known) welcomed its first two students in March 2002. At that time, registration allowed for the admission of three young people between the ages of 11-16 years. Internal building developments allowed for the registered provision to be raised to seven in the summer of that year.

Our reputation allows us to be an organisation with a high rate of referral. Our commitment is to providing effective therapy, safe and supportive residential care, and education that inspires and motivates; sound financial management

With the opening of the Bungalow, for semi-independent living, during the summer of 2004, we then had nine young people in our community and an age range of 11-19 years.

An ever increasing number of, interesting, referrals for younger age pupils saw us increase our age range to 10-19 years.

TheSPACE/Human Givens Consultancy (The Centre) moved into its new premises, in Kendal, in March 2005 having previously occupied a nomadic existence.

An excellent OfSTED Inspection and change of registration (including the school name) saw Fellside Middle School open in August 2005 and is home to five young people.

Fellside is a residential therapeutic community, currently, incorporating Upper and Middle Schools and Children's Home. It accommodates up to fourteen young people, both male and female, between the ages of 7-19 years, who may, where appropriate, live with us for up to 52 weeks in the year.
